I’ve been teasing my wife that I will be giving up preaching for Lent.

And in a way, I am. I’m still preaching on Sundays, but on Wednesdays, I’m participating in a drama with a collegue. Instead of preparing a sermon, I’m memorizing lines and putting together costumes. It’s been a cool process and I hope that we will be able to proclaim the Gospel through drama through the next weeks of Lent. Detroit Free Press Columnist Drew Sharp had this to say in his February 5 column

Detroit wanted the visitors. Miami considered them a nuisance.

He goes on to say that some national columnists were commenting that Detroit did a better job of putting the Super Bowl presentation togther, despite the fact that this year the temperature in Miami was 69 and in Detroit is was 1. I thought churches could learn from the article so I put in in the links on my blog. Find it in the left column.

What I think churches could learn is that people don’t want to be where you don’t want to be. If you act like worshipping and serving God is a chore, something that is “horrible” or just to bear, they are probably not going to want to be there with you.

That’s not to say we don’t have some things to improve in our preaching of the Gospel in our churches or that we always have to put on a happy face. Sometimes the temperature is going to be 10 below 0, even in the church. I always try to remember who it is that I serve and worship and that makes it all worth sharing with others.
